Deprecated model

Sunsets not explicitly published; retired as part of the Grok 4.x transition wave, May–July 2026

Grok 2 / Grok 2 Vision is retired; no current first-party xAI SKU is promoted for Grok 2. Grok 2 Vision was historically priced at $2.00 input / $10.00 output per MTok — those rates are not published for any current Grok 2 endpoint. Deprecated grok-4 slugs redirect to grok-4.3 billing; Grok 2 has no explicit documented redirect — treat as end-of-life. The sunset date is not explicitly published for Grok 2; the model was retired as part of the Grok 4.x transition wave (May–July 2026).

Rate limits by tier

Grok 2 is a retired legacy model with no current first-party xAI SKU — rate limits are not published for the retired endpoint. The limits below describe the current successor Grok 4.5, which is what xAI actively supports. Historical anecdotal references for Grok 2-era fast models cited ~600 RPM / 10 RPS; treat these as non-authoritative context only.

Hitting a 429? The playbook

The exact errors you'll see

HTTP 429 Too Many RequestsRateLimitError (OpenAI-SDK compatible — same error structure as Grok 4.x)Grok 2-era behavior uses the same HTTP 429 protocol as Grok 4.5

Why it happens & how to fix it

Calling retired grok-2 slug at high volume

Migrating to the current Grok 4.5 API string is the real fix. Deprecated slugs may redirect to Grok 4.3 billing at unpredictable rates. Update the model parameter to the current Grok 4.5 string (verify on docs.x.ai).

RPS burst exceeds 150 RPS cap on Grok 4.5

Throttle concurrency with a semaphore or token-bucket limiter before the API call. Implement exponential backoff: wait = 2 ** attempt seconds, with ±20% jitter.

TPM exhaustion (50M TPM cap on Grok 4.5)

Reduce per-request token load; cache system prompts (cached input $0.50/MTok, counts separately from standard input TPM tracking); submit rate-limit increase request on xAI Console.

Thinking token volume spike

Set reasoning_effort=low for non-reasoning tasks (classification, routing, extraction). Reasoning tokens are billed as output at $6.00/MTok and can double effective output token volume.

Retry strategy

xAI does not publish a Retry-After response header — implement exponential backoff unconditionally using wait = 2 ** attempt seconds with ±20% random jitter. The OpenAI SDK is compatible with xAI (swap baseURL to https://api.x.ai/v1); catch RateLimitError, wait, then retry. Cap retries at 5–7 iterations. After migration to Grok 4.5, monitor the xAI Console for your actual per-account limits.

How to raise your limits

The ladder from the starter tier to enterprise — what each rung takes, and what it unlocks.

1

Entry (any spend)

Automatic — tiers unlock as spend crosses thresholds (thresholds not published, monitor xAI Console Rate Limits page).

Recharge any amount to activate API access. No free tier — the old $150/month credit program ended May 2025. Cumulative spend since January 1, 2026 governs which tier you are on.

Unlocks: Production API access; tiers never downgrade.

2

Higher RPS / TPM via request form

Days to weeks — reviewed by xAI team.

Submit the rate-limit increase form on xAI Console (docs.x.ai) with use case and expected volume.

Unlocks: Elevated per-model RPS and TPM beyond the default 150 RPS / 50M TPM caps.

3

Enterprise / Voice / Imagine

Custom negotiation — typically 1–4 weeks.

Contact sales@x.ai with specific product and volume requirements.

Unlocks: Custom rate limits, SLAs, Voice/Imagine endpoint access, and dedicated infrastructure.

Cut your token spend

Migrate off Grok 2 to Grok 4.5

Eliminates uncertainty from an unpublished, retired endpoint

Grok 2 pricing is not published for any current endpoint. Grok 4.5 at $2.00/$6.00/MTok is the maintained path with documented limits. Update your model string (verify exact Grok 4.5 API name on docs.x.ai).

Cache system prompts with Grok 4.5

-75% on cached input cost ($0.50 vs $2.00/MTok standard)

Cache stable system context — persona, instructions, retrieved documents — in xAI's cached input feature. Especially impactful in agentic loops with a fixed system prompt on every call.

Set reasoning_effort=low for classification tasks

Avoid output-token spikes from thinking mode

Reasoning tokens bill as output at $6.00/MTok and can double effective output volume. Use reasoning_effort=low or med for routing, extraction, and classification; reserve high for complex reasoning.

Keep prompts under 200K tokens

Avoids unpublished higher rate for >200K requests within the 500K window

Split long documents into chunked calls. If full-window context is necessary, budget conservatively — the >200K surcharge rate is unpublished.

Count tool calls separately from token budget

Avoids $5/1,000 Web/X Search and Code Execution call charges accumulating unnoticed

In agentic workflows, track tool call count separately. Batch multiple search lookups into single tool invocations where the API supports it.

Monitor xAI Console Rate Limits page

Personalized caps shown per account — not visible in public docs

Your actual tier limits may be higher or lower than published defaults. Check the Rate Limits page in the xAI Console regularly, especially after cumulative spend milestones.

Frequently asked questions

Does Grok 2 still work via the API?

Grok 2 / Grok 2 Vision is retired — xAI no longer promotes it as a current SKU. The slug may still resolve, but pricing is not published and the endpoint is not maintained. If your code references grok-2, migrate to the current Grok 4.5 API string (verify the exact name on docs.x.ai). Continuing to call a retired slug risks unexpected billing behavior or silent deprecation.

What is the Grok 2 API price?

Grok 2 pricing is not published — the model is retired. Grok 2 Vision was historically $2.00 input / $10.00 output per MTok, but these rates no longer apply to any active endpoint. The current xAI flagship is Grok 4.5 at $2.00 input / $6.00 output per MTok with cached input at $0.50/MTok.

How do I migrate from Grok 2 to Grok 4.5?

Update the model parameter in your API calls from 'grok-2' (or 'grok-2-vision') to the current Grok 4.5 string — verify the exact API name on docs.x.ai. The xAI API is OpenAI-SDK compatible, so no other client code changes are needed. Test against the new model in staging, as capabilities and token pricing differ. Grok 4.5 adds 500K context and reasoning modes not available in Grok 2.

Is the xAI API free?

No. xAI ended its $150/month free credit program in May 2025. There is no free API tier. You must recharge your xAI account to access any Grok model. Billing for Grok 4.5 starts at $2.00/MTok input and $6.00/MTok output.

How does Grok 4.5 compare to Mistral Large on pricing?

Grok 4.5 and Mistral Large 3 are at pricing parity on input ($2.00/MTok) and output ($6.00/MTok). Mistral has a 50% batch discount that Grok 4.5 lacks at launch. Grok 4.5 has a much larger 500K context window vs Mistral Large's 128K, and includes native X Search grounding. Mistral offers a free experimental tier and EU-based inference.

What does HTTP 429 mean when calling the xAI API?

HTTP 429 Too Many Requests means you exceeded either the 150 RPS hard cap or the 50M TPM limit on Grok 4.5. The OpenAI SDK surfaces this as RateLimitError. xAI does not send a Retry-After header — implement exponential backoff (wait = 2 ** attempt seconds with random jitter). If you hit 429s calling grok-2, the fix is to migrate to grok-4.5 first, then tune concurrency.
